Doppio LogoI suppose you always had the sea and the mountains and we always Doppio Zero (seemed like a fair trade to me!) but now that we are sending you Doppio Zero, could you send us the sea and the mountain. Yes, I know what you are thinking, being from Johannesburg we will probably only mess them up anyway. Well I don’t know, we may start charging admission to the sea and I am not certain that climbing the mountain will be that safe ever again, but at least we will build a highway to them that actually goes somewhere.

I never quite figured out what it was about that mountain you all love so much. Is it the fact that it is so big, so flat? I mean we have Linkfield Ridge and Waterworld (and until now, the exclusive use of Doppio Zero), so what’s the big deal? Actually my favourite mountain in Cape Town is just a few clicks away. There is nothing like the climb up Lions Head, now that is worth visiting Cape Town for. (Oh yes and the new Doppio Zero in Cavendish Connect).

First there is that back breaking slog up the path! Your lower back strains as you bend forward fighting the strong gradient. If you are not too fit that first look out point just can’t come soon enough! You pretend to be interested in the view just to get a breather. As the road winds around and Camps Bay is revealed you start to feel like this might actually be worth it but it does not prepare you for the spectacular views still to follow.

A little bit of stepping comes into play, not climbing yet, just stepping, you move around to reveal Bantry Bay and Sea Point and a look at Signal Hill. Scurrying up rocks, passing smiling Dutch tourists on their way down, looking tanned and rested after a few days in The Kruger or along the Garden Route. You look up and there it is “the chains”Recommended

Easy after the first time but daunting now. Your hands are slippery from sweat and suntan lotion and the chains seem to bite into your hands. You make your way up and the ‘climbing’ starts. I mean it is not ropes and pegs but a few ladders and a bit of stretching. You fight your way up the narrow path and suddenly there it is… the beacon and the best view in the World (Ok, so I haven’t traveled that much, but it is spectacular) 360 degree views, shining sea, Robben Island, Blouwberg and the whole of Cape Town. Even a Joburg boy has to be impressed.

A short break, a few photos and it is back down again… now you can do something really special! Go visit the new Doppio Zero at Cavendish Connect and tell them “Too Much Coffee sent you!” It won’t really help but it just sounds so good.
